  • Nuclear Rings in Galaxies—a Kinematic Perspective

We combine DensePak integral field unit and TAURUS Fabry-Perot observations of 13 nuclear rings to show an interconnection between the kinematic properties of the rings and their resonant origin. The nuclear rings have regular and symmetric kinematics, and lack strong non-circular motions. This symmetry, coupled with a direct relationship between

  • Nuclear Spectra of Comet 28P Neujmin 1

We present visible and near-infrared spectra of the nucleus of comet 28P/Neujmin 1, obtained in 2001, 2002, and 2003, while it had no detectable coma. The spectra show no strong features in this wavelength range, which prevented the identification of specific compounds on the surface of comet 28P. We found evidence for spectral variability, as our

  • Observability and Geometry in Three Dimensional Quantum Gravity

We consider the coupling between massive and spinning particles and three dimensional gravity. This allows us to construct geometric operators (distances between particles) as Dirac observables. We quantize the system à la loop quantum gravity: we give a description of the kinematical Hilbert space and construct the associated spin-foam model. We

  • Observation and interpretation of the asymmetric Stokes Q, U, and V line profiles in sunspots

We present a first approach to systematic characterization and interpretation of observed asymmetries of Stokes profiles as a function of spatial position within sunspots. Spatial maps of the full Stokes profiles of Fe I 6302.5 A gathered in large sunspots using the HAO Stokes II instrument reveal asymmetries that vary systematically across large

  • Observation and modelling of main-sequence star chromospheres - XIX. FIES and FEROS observations of dM1 stars

We present 187 high-resolution spectra for 62 different M1 dwarfs from observations obtained with the FIbre-fed Echelle Spectrograph (FIES) on the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) and from observations with the Fibre-fed Extended Range Echelle Spectrograph (FEROS) from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) data base.
