  • WeCAPP - The Wendelstein Calar Alto Pixellensing Project Tracing Dark and Bright Matter in M31
We present WeCAPP, a long term monitoring project searching for microlensing events towards M31. Since 1997 the bulge of M31 was monitored in two different wavebands with the Wendelstein 0.8 m telescope. In 1999 we extended our observations to the Calar Alto 1.23 m telescope. Observing simultaneously at these two sites we obtained a time coverage

  • How Normal Disk Galaxies Ionize their Surroundings
We examine using numerical examples and conservative assumptions, the consequences of the fractal structure of the interstellar medium in a disk galaxy in permitting the propagation of the ionizing radiation emitted by its massive stellar population. We compare the Strömgren sphere in a homogeneous medium with its equivalent in a clumpy medium

  • An Iceberg Scenario for Late-Type Spiral Galaxy Bulges
Fitting exponential profiles to the bulges of the early-type spiral galaxies from de Jong & van der Kruit (1994) under-estimates their sizes at the 2-3 sigma significance level. Allowing for the range of structural shapes which these bulges possess - through fitting an r1/n profile - the mean effective bulge radius to disk scale-length ratio, re/h

  • Nuclear Star Formation in the Hotspot Galaxy NGC 2903
We analyze the star formation properties of the hotspot galaxy NGC 2903 using high resolution Hubble Space Telescope and adaptive optics observations. The circumnuclear star formation in NGC 2903 shows a ringlike morphology with an approximate diameter of 625 pc. For the first time, the infrared hotspots have been resolved into individual young
