  • Swift observations of the accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J17498-2921: from outburst to quiescence

Swift has been monitoring the accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J17498-2921 since the start of its outburst in 2011 August 12 (ATels #3551, #3555, #3556). We detected two X-ray bursts on Aug. 18 and 28. During the first ~12 days the average persistent XRT count rate remained approximately constant at 3-7 c/s. Around Aug. 24 the source count rate

  • T80Cam: the wide field camera for the OAJ 83-cm telescope

The Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre (OAJ) is a new astronomical facility located at the Sierra de Javalambre (Teruel, Spain) whose primary role will be to conduct all-sky astronomical surveys. The OAJ facility will have two wide-field telescopes: the JST/T250; a 2.55-m telescope with a 3° diameter field of view (FoV), and the JAST/T80; an 0

  • Taiwan Oscillation Network

The Taiwan Oscillation Network (TON) is a ground-based network to measure solar intensity oscillations to study the internal structure of the Sun. K-line full-disk images of 1000 pixels diameter are taken at a rate of one image per minute. Such data would provide information onp-modes withl as high as 1000. The TON will consist of six identical

  • Taking the Temperature of the New Planet TrES-1

We propose to observe the newly-discovered transiting planet TrES-1 during the time of secondary eclipse (when the planet passes behind the star). A successful measurement of this eclipse would constitute the first direct detection of emission from an extrasolar planet. The secondary eclipse will reveal two key quantities of the planet: its

  • Teaching students about informatics and astronomy using real data for detection of asteroids

In this paper we approach the astronomy teaching process for students in computer sciences through a controlled investigation method using real astronomical data, including data reduction and quality control of the astrometry of near-Earth asteroids. The method used data collected on the Isaac Newton Telescope located at the ORM observatory on the

  • Testing models of stellar structure and evolution - I. Comparison with detached eclipsing binaries

We present the results of an analysis aimed at testing the accuracy and precision of the PARSEC v1.2S library of stellar evolution models, combined with a Bayesian approach, to infer stellar parameters. We mainly employ the online DEBCat catalogue by Southworth, a compilation of detached eclipsing binary systems with published measurements of
