  • Massive compact galaxies in the local Universe: what are they?

Recent investigations have provided evidences that many massive (M_* > 10^{11} M_&sun;) spheroid galaxies in the early universe (z ≥ 1.5) were extremely compact (r_e ˜ 1 kpc). According to some galaxy formation theories, a fraction of these massive galaxies in the local Universe would represent surviving relics of the high-z massive galaxies. We

  • Massive star formation in Wolf-Rayet galaxies. I. Optical and NIR photometric results

Aims: We have performed a comprehensive multiwavelength analysis of a sample of 20 starburst galaxies that show the presence of a substantial population of massive stars. The main aims are the study of the massive star formation and stellar populations in these galaxies, and the role that interactions with or between dwarf galaxies and/or low

  • Massive stars in local group spirals

We present observations and analyses of some of the most massive stars in the Milky Way, showing the potential and limits of current model atmospheres, and the consequences for the evolution theory of massive stars. We then show how these techniques can be applied to very bright stars in M31 and M33 to derive radial abundance gradients and get

  • MASTER Optical Detection of the First LIGO/Virgo Neutron Star Binary Merger GW170817

Following the discovery of the gravitational-wave source GW170817 by three Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO)/Virgo antennae (Abbott et al., 2017a), the MASTER Global Robotic Net telescopes obtained the first image of the NGC 4993 host galaxy. An optical transient, MASTER OTJ130948.10-232253.3/SSS17a was later found, which

  • Measurement of electroweak production of a W boson and two forward jets in proton-proton collisions at √{s}=8 TeV

A measurement is presented of the cross section for the electroweak production of a W boson in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.3 fb-1. The measured fiducial cross section for W bosons decaying
