  • The European Large Area ISO Survey - VI. Discovery of a new hyperluminous infrared galaxy

We report the discovery of the first hyperluminous infrared galaxy (HyLIG) in the course of the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). This object has been detected by ISO at 6.7, 15 and 90μm, and is found to be a broad-line, radio-quiet quasar at a redshift [formmu4]z=1.099. From a detailed multicomponent model fit of the spectral energy

  • The European Large Area ISO Survey - VIII. 90-μm final analysis and source counts

We present a re-analysis of the European Large Area Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Survey (ELAIS) 90-μm observations carried out with ISOPHOT, an instrument on board the ISO of the European Space Agency. With more than 12 deg2, the ELAIS survey is the largest area covered by ISO in a single programme and is about one order of magnitude deeper

  • The EUSO-Balloon pathfinder

EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder for JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory which is to be hosted on-board the International Space Station. As JEM-EUSO is designed to observe Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR)-induced Extensive Air Showers (EAS) by detecting their ultraviolet light tracks "from above", EUSO-Balloon is a nadir-pointing UV

  • The evolution of Galactic planetary nebula progenitors through the comparison of their nebular abundances with AGB yields

We study the chemical abundances of a wide sample of 142 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) with good-quality observations, for which the abundances have been derived more or less homogeneously, thus allowing a reasonable comparison with stellar models. The goal is the determination of mass, chemical composition and formation epoch of their

  • The evolution of radio loud quasar host galaxies: AO observations at z ˜ 3

We report on ESO VLT adaptive optics imaging of one radio-loud quasar at z ˜ 3. In spite of the large distance of the object we are able to detect its surrounding extended nebulosity the properties of which are consistent with an underlying massive galaxy of MK ˜ -27 and effective radius Re = 7 kpc. As far as we know this is the clearest detection

  • The Evolution of the Number Density of Compact Galaxies

We compare the number density of compact (small size) massive galaxies at low and high redshift using our Padova Millennium Galaxy and Group Catalogue (PM2GC) at z = 0.03-0.11 and the CANDELS results from Barro et al. at z = 1-2. The number density of local compact galaxies with luminosity weighted (LW) ages compatible with being already passive at
