  • Determining the population of Cataclysmic Variables in the Globular Cluster NGC2808

Close binaries, and in particular cataclysmic variables (CVs), play a vital role in the dynamical evolution of globular clusters. It is, therefore, important to understand the formation of these systems in the core of a cluster. Here we propose to test the dynamical formation scenarios of CVs by observing NGC 2808 in the X-rays with Chandra. In

  • Development status of the telescope for the Ingenio/SEOSAT mission primary payload

Ingenio/SEOSAT is the flagship mission for the Spanish Space Plan 2007-2011, as is currently under development by a Spanish industrial consortium in the framework of an ESA contract. Ingenio/SEOSAT is a multi-spectral high-resolution optical satellite for Earth Remote Sensing, designed to provide imagery to different Spanish civil, institutional

  • Discovery of a brown dwarf in the Pleiades star cluster

BROWN dwarfs are cool star-like objects that have insufficient mass to maintain stable nuclear fusion in their interiors. Although brown dwarfs are not stars, they are expected to form in the same way, and their frequency of occurrence should reflect the trends seen in the birthrates of low-mass stars. But finding brown dwarfs has proved to be

  • Discovery of a planet around the K giant star 4 Ursae Majoris

For the past 3 years we have been monitoring a sample of 62 K giant stars using precise stellar radial velocity measurements with high accuracy taken at the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg. We search for sub-stellar companions to giant stars and try to understand the nature of the diverse radial velocity variations exhibited by K giant stars

  • Discovery of Very High Energy γ-Ray Emission from the Low-Frequency-peaked BL Lacertae Object BL Lacertae

The MAGIC collaboration observed BL Lacertae for 22.2 hr during 2005 August to December and for 26 hr during 2006 July to September. The source is the historical prototype and eponym of a class of low-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae (LBL) objects. A very high energy (VHE) γ-ray signal was discovered with a 5.1 σ excess in the 2005 data. Above 200 GeV

  • Discovery of Very High Energy γ-Rays from 1ES 1011+496 at z = 0.212

We report on the discovery of very high energy (VHE) γ-ray emission from the BL Lacertae object 1ES 1011+496. The observation was triggered by an optical outburst in 2007 March and the source was observed with the MAGIC telescope from 2007 March to May. Observing for 18.7 hr, we find an excess of 6.2 σ with an integrated flux above 200 GeV of (1.58
