Descripción
We present UVOT imaging of a sample of 25 nearby star forming galaxies. Most of these galaxies are included in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) and have been observed by Spitzer in the Infrared as well as at optical wavelengths. We use the UVOT near ultraviolet imaging in conjunction with ground based optical and Spitzer infrared data to investigate the recent star formation in these galaxies as a function of galaxy properties. Additionally, given the spectral resolution UVOT provides in the near UV we are able to constrain the stength of the 2175 Å dust bump in these galaxies. We investigate variations of the bump strength as a function of the physical properties of the galaxies, as well as spatial variations within the galaxies. In particular we correlate the 2175 Å bump strength with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features in the infrared to test the hypothesis that PAHs give rise to the bump. This project was funded in part by the NASA Astrophysics Data Analysis Program.
