  • Precise X-ray position of A1744-36 (=XTE J1748-361?)
    The Ariel-5 X-ray transient A1744-36 and the newly-discovered transient XTE J1748-361 may be identical (ATEL #204). Based on a 16 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of A1744-36 made on 2003 May 28, the position of this source is RA(J2000) = 17:48:19.22, Dec(J2000) = -36:07:16.6 (uncertainty < 1").

  • Observing the Dark Matter Density Profile of Isolated Galaxies
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we probe the halo mass distribution by studying the velocities of satellites orbiting isolated galaxies. In a subsample that covers 2500 deg2 on the sky, we detect about 3000 satellites with absolute blue magnitudes going down to MB=-14; most of the satellites have MB=-16 to -18, comparable to the

  • NIR surface photometry of a sample of nearby spiral galaxies
The first results of an observational programme aimed at mapping a sample of face-on spiral galaxies in the NIR are presented. This paper shows the surface photometry of the first ten galaxies in the sample. The data were taken in the broad band J (1.2 mu m) and Ks (2.2 mu m) filters. The sources were selected mainly according to their size and

  • JEM-X observations of the Be/X-ray binary EXO 2030+375
We have used data from the Joint European Monitor (JEM-X) to perform an X-ray spectral and timing analysis of the 42-s transient pulsar EXO 2030+375 during an X-ray outburst. X-ray pulsations are clearly detected with an average pulse period of 41.66+/-0.05 s and an average pulse fraction of 60%. The profile of the energy spectrum did not change
