  • Evidence for a large stellar bar in the Low Surface Brightness galaxy UGC 7321
Late-type spiral galaxies are thought to be the dynamically simplest type of disk galaxy and our understanding of their properties plays a key role in galaxy formation and evolution scenarios. The low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 7321, a nearby, isolated, ``superthin'' edge-on galaxy, is an ideal object to study these purely disk-dominated

  • Dynamical evolution of globular cluster systems in clusters of galaxies - I. The case of NGC 1404 in the Fornax cluster
We investigate, via numerical simulations, the tidal stripping and accretion of globular clusters (GCs). In particular, we focus on creating models that simulate the situation for the GC systems of NGC 1404 and 1399 in the Fornax cluster, which have poor (specific frequency SN~ 2) and rich (SN~ 10) GC systems, respectively. We initially assign NGC

  • Discriminating between unresolved point sources and `negative' Sunyaev-Zel'dovich clusters in cosmic microwave background maps
Clusters of galaxies produce negative features at wavelengths λ > 1.25 mm in cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps by means of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, while point radio sources produce positive peaks. This fact implies that a distribution of unresolved SZ clusters could be detected using the negative asymmetry introduced in the

  • Confirming the Metal-Rich Nature of Stars with Giant Planets
With the goal of confirming the metallicity ``excess'' observed in stars with planetary mass companions, we have conducted a high-precision spectroscopic study of a ``comparison'' sample of dwarfs included in the CORALIE extra-solar planet survey (Santos, Israelian, & Mayor 2001). The targets were chosen following two basic criteria: they make part

  • Chromospheric Magnetism and the Hanle Effect
This article shows how some recent developments in the observation and theoretical modeling of weak polarization signals in chromospheric spectral lines are facilitating fundamental new advances in our ability to investigate the magnetism of the solar outer atmosphere via spectropolarimetry.

  • Beryllium Abundances in Stars Hosting Planets
Very valuable information can be obtained by studying surface chemical abundances in stars with orbiting planets. Possible interactions between extrasolar planets and their parent stars can be studied using light elements as lithium and beryllium, which are excellent tracers of mixing mechanisms operating in the stellar interior. A wide sample of
