  • Velocity Dispersions and Stellar Populations of the Most Compact and Massive Early-Type Galaxies at Redshift ~1
We present Gran-Telescopio-Canarias/OSIRIS optical spectra of 4 of the most compact and massive early-type galaxies in the Groth Strip Survey at redshift z 1, with effective radii R_e=0.5-2.4 kpc and photometric stellar masses M_⋆=1.2-4×10^11 M_⊙. We find these galaxies have velocity dispersions σ=156-236 km s^-1. The spectra are well fitted by

  • Two new ultracool benchmark systems from WISE+2MASS
We have used the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer to look for ultracool dwarfs that are part of multiple systems containing main-sequence stars. We cross-matched L dwarf candidates from the surveys with Hipparcos and Gliese stars, finding two new systems. The first system, G255-34AB, is an L2 dwarf companion to

  • Two new SB2 binaries with main sequence B-type pulsators in the Kepler field
Context. OB stars are important in the chemistry and evolution of the Universe, but the sample of targets that is well understood from an asteroseismological point of view is still too limited to provide feedback on the current evolutionary models. Aims: We extend this sample with two spectroscopic binary systems. Our goal is to provide orbital

  • Tunable filter absorption line spectroscopy of the Galactic bar. Metallicity gradients
The stellar metallicity distribution of stars can be a very useful tool to constrain the chemical evolution models reproducing different formation scenarios for the Galactic bulge. However, classical spectroscopy of individual stars is observationally expensive, and the surveys done so far have been unsuccessful due to the low number statistics

  • Towards a reliable star formation history of the galactic disk in the Gaia era
A new tool is being developed to derive the star formation and chemical enrichment history of the galactic disc through comparison of future Gaia data with synthetic color magnitude diagrams. First steps are being conducted joining two powerful algorithms: IAC-pop/MinnIAC, a code that has widely and very successfully being applied to external

  • The z = 5 Quasar Luminosity Function from SDSS Stripe 82
We present a measurement of the Type I quasar luminosity function at z = 5 using a large sample of spectroscopically confirmed quasars selected from optical imaging data. We measure the bright end (M 1450
