  • Running of the Spectral Index as a Probe of Physics at High Energy
The WMAP results on the scalar spectral index n and its running with scale, though preliminary, open a very interesting window to physics at very high energies. We address the problem of finding simple inflaton potentials, well motivated by particle physics, that can accommodate WMAP data.

  • RXTE observation XTE J1701-462: no indications for renewed activity
Prompted by the recent report of increased Swift/BAT activity from the neutron star X-ray transient XTE J1701-462 (ATel #3028), the source was observed for ~1.4 ks with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer on 2010 November 13 11:16 UTC. The average count rate from the PCA was 2.0+/-0.2 cts/s/PCU, consistent with the count rate from the Galactic ridge

  • Sailing under the Magellanic Clouds: a DECam view of the Carina dwarf
We present deep optical photometry from the DECam imager on the 4 m Blanco telescope of over 12 deg2 around the Carina dwarf spheroidal, with complete coverage out to 1 deg and partial coverage extending out to 2.6 deg. Using a Poisson-based matched-filter analysis to identify stars from each of the three main stellar populations, old, intermediate

  • Scaling relations in early-type galaxies from integral-field stellar kinematics
Early-type galaxies (ETGs) satisfy a now classic scaling relation Re ∝ σ1.2eI-0.8e, the Fundamental Plane (FP; Djorgovski & Davis 1987; Dressler et al. 1987), between their size, stellar velocity dispersion and mean surface brightness. A significant effort has been devoted in the past twenty years to try to understand why the coefficients of the
