  • Extremely compact massive galaxies at z ~ 1.4

The optical rest-frame sizes of 10 of the most massive (~5 × 1011h-270Msolar) galaxies found in the near-infrared MUNICS survey at 1.2 < z < 1.7 are analysed. Sizes are estimated in both the J and K' filters. These massive galaxies are at least a factor of 4+1.9-1.0 (+/-1σ) smaller in the rest-frame V-band than local counterparts of the same

  • Extremely red stellar objects revealed by IPHAS

We present photometric analysis and follow-up spectroscopy for a population of extremely red stellar objects extracted from the point-source catalogue of the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric Hα Survey (IPHAS) of the northern Galactic plane. The vast majority of these objects have no previous identification. Analysis of optical, near- and

  • Faint Emission Lines and Temperature Fluctuations in M8

We present echelle spectroscopy in the 3500 to 10300AA range of the Hourglass Nebula which is embedded in the galactic HII region M8. The data were obtained using the 2.1 m telescope at Observatorio Astronomico Nacional in San Pedro Martir, Baja California. We have measured the intensities of 274 emission lines, in particular 88 permitted lines of

  • Families of galaxies in the mu(e)-R(e) plane

On the basis of a sample of Virgo cluster galaxies in a larger set of heterogeneous literature data, it is shown that ellipticals, early-type dwarfs, and bulges of S0s and of spirals form two distinct families in the plane of the effective parameters, R(e) and mu(e). The 'ordinary' family is composed of all galaxies fainter than MB of about -19.3

  • Fast Magnetohydrodynamic Oscillations in Cylindrical Prominence Fibrils

Some observations suggest that quiescent solar prominences can be considered as composed by small-scale loops, or fibrils, which are stacked one after another in both the vertical and horizontal directions. In a previous work we studied, in Cartesian geometry, the propagation of fast MHD waves in a two-dimensional magnetostatic model representing

  • Feedback and Feeding in the Context of Galaxy Evolution with SPICA: Direct Characterisation of Molecular Outflows and Inflows

A far-infrared observatory such as the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics, with its unprecedented spectroscopic sensitivity, would unveil the role of feedback in galaxy evolution during the last 10 Gyr of the Universe (z = 1.5-2), through the use of far- and mid-infrared molecular and ionic fine structure lines that trace
