  • A tool to separate optical/infrared disc and jet emission in X-ray transient outbursts: the colour-magnitude diagrams of XTE J1550-564
It is now established that thermal disc emission and non-thermal jet emission can both play a role at optical/infrared (OIR) wavelengths in X-ray transients. The spectra of the jet and disc components differ, as do their dependence on mass accretion properties. Here we demonstrate that the OIR colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the evolution of

  • A wide deep infrared look at the Pleiades with UKIDSS: new constraints on the substellar binary fraction and the low-mass initial mass function
We present the results of a deep wide-field near-infrared survey of 12 deg2 of the Pleiades conducted as part of the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS). We have extracted over 340 high-probability proper motion (PM) members down to 0.03 Msolar using a combination of UKIDSS

  • A young binary brown dwarf in the R-CrA star formation region
We present imaging and spectroscopic observations with HST (WFPC2, ACS/HRC and STIS), VLT (FORS2) and Keck (HIRES) of the dM 8 ultra-cool dwarf DENIS-P J185950.9-370632, located in the R-CrA region. The presence of lithium absorption at 670.8 nm and the strong Hα emission indicate a young age and a sub-stellar mass. Our diffraction-limited images

  • A young, dusty, compact radio source within a Lyα halo
We report here on the discovery of a red quasar, J004929.4+351025.7 at a redshift of z = 2.48, situated within a large Lyα emission-line halo. The radio spectral energy distribution implies that the radio jets were triggered

  • Abell 43 and PG 0122+200: a Look at the Beginning and at the End of the PG 1159 Instability Strip
While Abell 43 is entering the PG 1159 instability strip, in fact as an "hybrid-PG 1159" nucleus of a planetary nebula, PG 0122+200 presently defines its red edge. So these two stars define the limits of the instability strip along the evolutionary sequence from the planetary nebula nuclei to the pre-white dwarf PG 1159 stars. We describe the new

  • Absolute motions of globular clusters. II. HST astrometry and VLT radial velocities in NGC 6397
In this paper we present a new, accurate determination of the three components of the absolute space velocity of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397 (l≃338°, b≃-12°). We used three HST/WFPC2 fields with multi-epoch observations to obtain astrometric measurements of objects in three different fields in this cluster. The identification of 33
