  • GRB 081007 and GRB 090424: The Surrounding Medium, Outflows, and Supernovae
We discuss the results of the analysis of multi-wavelength data for the afterglows of GRB 081007 and GRB 090424, two bursts detected by Swift. One of them, GRB 081007, also shows a spectroscopically confirmed supernova, SN 2008hw, which resembles SN 1998bw in its absorption features, while the maximum magnitude may be fainter, up to 0.7 mag, than

  • Evidence for quiescent synchrotron emission in the black hole X-ray transient Swift J1357.2-0933
We present high time resolution ULTRACAM optical and NOTCam infrared observations of the edge-on black hole X-ray transient Swift J1357.2-0933. Our data taken in 2012 and 2013 show the system to be at its pre-outburst magnitude and so the system is in quiescence. In contrast to other X-ray transients, the quiescent light curves of Swift J1357.2

  • Determination of the iron content of Cepheids from the shape of their light curves
We present the study of the metallicity dependence of the Fourier amplitude ratios R21 and R31 for the light curves of short-period Galactic classical Cepheids in B, V, RC and IC bands. Based on the available photometric and spectroscopic data, we determined the relations between the atmospheric iron abundance, [Fe/H], and the Fourier parameters

  • Composite analysis with Monte Carlo methods: an example with cosmic rays and clouds
The composite (superposed epoch) analysis technique has been frequently employed to examine a hypothesized link between solar activity and the Earth's atmosphere, often through an investigation of Forbush decrease (Fd) events (sudden high-magnitude decreases in the flux cosmic rays impinging on the upper-atmosphere lasting up to several days). This

  • Broad absorption line quasars with redshifted troughs: high-velocity infall or rotationally dominated outflows?
We report the discovery in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey of 17 broad absorption line (BAL) quasars with high-ionization troughs that include absorption redshifted relative to the quasar rest frame. The redshifted troughs extend to velocities up to v ≃ 12 000 km s-1 and the trough widths

  • Atmospheric parameters of 169 F-, G-, K- and M-type stars in the Kepler field
The asteroseismic and planetary studies, like all research related to stars, need precise and accurate stellar atmospheric parameters as input. We aim at deriving the effective temperature (Teff), the surface gravity (log g), the metallicity ([Fe/H]), the projected rotational velocity (v sin i) and the MK type for 169 F-, G-, K- and M-type Kepler
