  • Panel Discussion I. Star Formation in Galaxies: How Do We Continue?
This is the written account of the first of two panel discussions, on Star formation in galaxies: how do we continue? The chair of the panel was Phil James, and panel members were John Beckman, Torsten Böker, Daniela Calzetti, Angeles Díaz, and Rob Kennicutt. The panel and audience discussed the following four questions: 1) What are the most

  • p-mode power variation with solar atmosphere as observed in the Na D1 and K spectral lines
In this work we investigate p-mode power variation with solar atmosphere. To this aim, we use THÉMIS observations of the Na D1 (λ5896 Å) and K (λ7699 Å) spectral lines. While the formation heights of the K spectral line are essentially located in the photospheric layer, the formation heights of the Na D1 line span a much wider region: from

  • Observations of Complex H, a High Velocity Cloud Close to the Galactic Plane
Using 21 cm observations of Complex H with the Green Bank Radio Telescope, we have derived its LSR velocity of ˜ 200 km s-1 and an H I mass of 7.5× 107 M&sun;. This gives useful support to the scenario in which the Galactic disk is being built up by the continual accretion of clouds of this type from the intracluster medium of the Local Group

  • NRAO 150: A Recently Identified Quasar Revealing Extreme Non-Ballistic Motion
NRAO 150 -- a compact and bright radio to mm source showing core/jet structure-- has been recently identified as a quasar at redshift 1.52 through a near-IR spectral observation. To compute quantitative estimates of the basic physical properties of the jet in the source, we have analysed the ultra-high-resolution images from a new sub

  • NGC 55 blue massive stars VLT-spectroscopy (Castro+, 2008)
Targets were selected from existing V- and I-band photometry obtained as part of the ongoing ARAUCARIA Cepheid search project whose results have been reported in Pietrzynski et al. (2006, Cat. ). These data were taken with the Warsaw 1.3m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. We obtained spectra for ~200 objects with FORS2 (FOcal Reducer and low
