  • SERVS: the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey
We will use warm Spitzer to image 18deg^2 of sky to microJy depth. This is deep enough to undertake a complete census of massive galaxies from z~6 to ~1 in a volume ~0.8Gpc^3, large enough to overcome the effects of cosmic variance, which place severe limitations on the conclusions that can be drawn from smaller fields. We will greatly enhance the

  • Seyfert host galaxies: Bars and Rings
Most previous work studying the possible relation between the presence of non-axisymmetric structures such as bars and rings in a galaxy, and the presence of activity in their nuclei, has been hampered by imperfections in the selection of sample galaxies, and especially of a control sample of non-active galaxies. We have started to tackle this

  • Shock Excited Molecules in NGC 1266: ULIRG Conditions at the Center of a Bulge-dominated Galaxy
We investigate the far infrared (IR) spectrum of NGC 1266, a S0 galaxy that contains a massive reservoir of highly excited molecular gas. Using the Herschel Fourier Transform Spectrometer, we detect the 12CO ladder up to J = (13-12), [C I] and [N II] lines, and also strong water lines more characteristic of UltraLuminous IR Galaxies (ULIRGs). • Shock induced polarized hydrogen emission lines in omicron Ceti
We have performed a spectropolarimetric survey of the variable Mira star omicron Ceti along three pulsation cycles. We present those new data collected with the Narval instrument mounted on the Télescope Bernard Lyot in Pic du Midi, France. We have detected time variable polarimetric signatures (on QUV Stokes spectra) associated with Balmer

  • Shock wave propagation in a magnetic flux tube
The propagation of a shock wave in a magnetic flux tube is studied within the framework of the Brinkley-Kirkwood theory adapted to a radiating gas. Simplified thermodynamic paths along which the compressed plasma returns to its initial state are considered. It is assumed that the undisturbed medium is uniform and that the flux tube is optically
