  • Galaxies-intergalactic medium interaction calculation - I. Galaxy formation as a function of large-scale environment
We present the first results of hydrodynamical simulations that follow the formation of galaxies to the present day in nearly spherical regions of radius ~20h-1Mpc drawn from the Millennium Simulation (Springel et al.). The regions have mean overdensities that deviate by (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2)σ from the cosmic mean, where σ is the rms mass fluctuation

  • Galaxy Evolution Studies with the SPace IR Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA): The Power of IR Spectroscopy
IR spectroscopy in the range 12-230 μm with the SPace IR telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) will reveal the physical processes governing the formation and evolution of galaxies and black holes through cosmic time, bridging the gap between the James Webb Space Telescope and the upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes at shorter wavelengths

  • Gamma Radiolysis of C-60 fullerene in water and water/ammonia mixtures: relevance of fullerene fate in ices of interstellar medium
The gamma radiolysis of fullerene C-60 dispersed in H2O, H2O/NH3, H2O/methanol and H2O/NH3/methanol was studied at 250 and 500 kGy. It was found that C-60 originally insoluble in the above mentioned hosting matrix became soluble as a consequence of multiple hydroxylation and oxidation reaction produced by the free radicals generated by the

  • Gamma-ray line emission from OB associations and young open clusters. I. Evolutionary synthesis models
We have developed a new diagnostic tool for the study of gamma-ray emission lines from radioactive isotopes (such as 26Al and 60Fe) in conjunction with other multi-wavelength observables of Galactic clusters, associations, and alike objects. Our evolutionary synthesis models are based on the code of \cite{CMH94}, which has been updated to include

  • Gas and dust in comet C/2000 WM1 during its closest approach to earth: optical imaging and long-slit spectroscopy
During Dec. 2-4, 2001, the comet C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) was observed at ESO by using the 1.5m Danish Telescope equipped with DFOSC as focal plane. The comet was imaged in broad-band filters (R,I) and interferometric filters covering the CN, C2, C3 gas emissions as well as clear continuum regions. Additionally, long-slit spectra were also taken as part

  • Gas and dust properties in the afterglow spectra of GRB 050730
We present early WHT ISIS optical spectroscopy of the afterglow of gamma-ray burst GRB 050730. The spectrum shows a DLA system with the highest measured hydrogen column to date: N(H I) = 22.1 ± 0.1 at the third-highest GRB redshift z = 3.968. Our analysis of the Swift XRT X-ray observations of the early afterglow show X-ray flares accompanied by
