Description
A region of our galaxy rich in dust and gas, the Milky Way, surrounding the brightest star in the Cygnus constellation, Deneb (alpha Cygni). Deneb is slightly to the left of centre in the image. This photograph was obtained with a narrow band h alpha filter and shows the large quantity of ionised hydrogen in this region. The North America Nebula (NGC7000) and the Pelican Nebula (IC5070) can be easily identified just beneath Deneb. An immense dark nebula known as the Northern Coalsack, which extends downwards and to the right from Deneb, is also visible. Other highlights include the Crescent Nebula (NGC6888), shaped like a peanut or cocoon, which can be seen halfway between the centre and the right hand edge of this wide field capture.
