PROF. PETER BERTSYK (Main Astronomical Observatory, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine)

Prof. Bertsyk has developed his career as an astrophysicist researcher at the Main Astronomical Observatory (MAO) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He spends few years as a post-doctoral researcher in Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), USA and in Astronomisches Rechen-Institut (ARI), University of Heidelberg, Germany. In a last decade he also frequently work as a visiting researcher in National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC, CAS), China. Currently he is a head of the Physics of Stars and Galaxies department of the MAO.

His main scientific interests are the dynamical evolution of galaxies and galactic structures including the galactic center and the supermassive black holes dynamics in the galactic center (star clusters, disk structures, etc...). He is one of the leading expert in Ukraine on the direct N-body code development, High performance CUDA/MPI GPU computing (including own dynamical public code development "phi-GPU").

Prof. Bertsyk in a last years has been participating in many international and national projects including two VolksWagen grants, was a head of one large scale national (Ukraine) National Science Foundation project.

The objective of the visit by Prof. Peter Bertsyk to the IAC is to collaborate with the group of Prof. Johan Knapen on a field of Galaxy and Galactic globular clusters dynamical evolution and numerical simulation (based on the new results of GAIA DR3 and the Illustris TNG cosmological project).

2019: Gold Orlov medal (named after the founder of the MAO NASU) the highest award of the Main Astronomical Observatory.
2014: Highest national award: State prize of Ukraine in the sphere of science and technology. Title: "Structure and evolution of the universe at the galactic and cosmological scales, hidden mass and dark energy: theoretical models and observational results".
2011: "PRACE Award: Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe".
