The members of the Comité Científico Internacional (CCI) of the Canary Islands Observatories met this week in La Laguna with the aim of discussing and analysing the scientific and technical information of the Observatorios de Canarias by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC).

The meeting marked the transfer of the vice-presidency of this committee from the past director of the IAC, Rafael Rebolo, to the current director, Valentín Martínez Pillet. The meeting was also attended by the deputy director of the IAC, Eva Villaver, among other participants with different responsibilities within the centre.

The CCI, presided over by Seppo Mattila of the University of Turku and representing the Finnish Academy of Sciences, is the organism created in the international agreements that established the Observatorios de Canarias for the effective participation of the user institutions in the adoption of decisions relating to the use and improvement of the observatories. The meeting, hosted at the Hotel Nivaria in La Laguna, was used to discuss the latest advances in astronomical research and to coordinate actions for the future.

The CCI working groups exchanged information on the scientific discoveries that have been made at the Observatorios de Canarias both at the Observatorio del Teide (OT) and Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), in Tenerife and La Palma, respectively, as well as projects for future facilities.

The members of the CCI focused on the importance of international collaboration in the field of astronomy and the joint projects they are working on. They also discussed about how satellite constellations can have an impact on astronomy.
