The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, present during the formal awarding of the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu qualification

La ministra de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades ha presidido este jueves en el CaixaForum el acto de reconocimiento de las Acreditaciones Severo Ochoa y María de Maeztu, que concede el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU), a través de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI), a centros y unidades de investigación de excelencia.

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) participated in the act which formally acknowleged the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu awards, given by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) via the National Research Agency (AEI). Diana Morant, the Minister of Science, Innovation, and the Universities presided over the act, which took place on Thursday 6th September at the CaixaForum in Madrid.

Morant reminded those present that these awards are “A vote of thanks by our country to these instituttions for the impact of their research on the wellbeing of the citizens, their contribution to the development of a competitive and innovative industry, and their high capacity for attracting national and international talent”. Morant explained further that these awards which the Government of Spain gives, via the National Agency for Research (AEI) are “the highest degree of recognition for the centre and units of excellence, and they are given after an extremely rigorous evaluation process”.

In the case of the IAC this award refers to the period 2020-2024, and was collected by the outgoing Director of the centre, Rafael Rebolo, who was accompanied by the present Director Valentín Martínez Pillet and by the manager of the project Dahimar Sánchez. 

 Severo Ochoa, since 2011

 The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias obtained the award and the seal as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence in the first edition of  the Programme in the year 2011. The distinction was awarded again in the years 2016 and 2020, with the IAC one of the six Spanish  centres granted this seal of excellence on three consecutive ocasions. 

 During the selection process the international evaluation committee noted that the IAC is a centre of research and of technological  development in which the scientific personnel not only carry out tasks of theoretical and observational research, but also lead in the  construction of advanced telescopes and instrumentation.
