The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias has participated in the discovery of a frozen super-Earth around Barnard’s star, in the second nearest solar system to ourselves.

An international team, led by researchers from the IAC, used data from the ESA satellite Gaia to measure the motion of 39 dwarf galaxies. These data gives information on the dynamics of these galaxies, their histories and their interactions with the Milky Way.

This morning at a press conference at the IAC the latest study of the economic and social impact of the Astrophysics Sector in the Canaries was presented, carried out by a team from the University of La Laguna and directed by the economist Professor Juan José Díaz Hernández. During his last visit to the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) we talked to the Director of the National Solar Observatory (NSO) of the United States about the launching of the Parker Solar Probe, among other subjects. The most recent edition of "Paralajes" magazine, of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) deals with the role of women in astronomy, picking out important figures in the history of this science until the present day, with special emphasis on the women scientists and engineers working in the IAC projects. This magazine is part of the project "The return of Henrietta Leavitt", an IAC initiative with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) collaboration.

The Ministry of Education and Universities of the Government of the Canary Islands and the IAC, Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, initiate joint training projects for the promotion of astronomy, enhancing Canary Islands’ sky resources and coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the pioneering Ley del Cielo (that aims to protect sky’s quality).
