From next Monday, June 27th until July 2nd , STARMUS, the multidisciplinary festival which brings together art, music, astrophysics and space science, will be held in Tenerife and La Palma. The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias and the Gran Telescopio CANARIAS will again collaborate in this festival which, in its third edition, will pay tribute to the British cosmologist and physicist Stephen Hawking.

From 25 to 28 July, the IAC will host at its headquarters in La Laguna (Tenerife), the second edition of this training course in astronomy aimed at European teachers of science and technology. Tuition is free for Spanish teachers and registration will remain open until July 15 or until full capacity is reached.

Its first edition is dedicated to luminous cosmic phenomena, and includes the special article "Tsunami STARMUS 2014"

El personal del Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) recibió esta tarde al físico teórico Stephen Hawking para nombrarle “Profesor Honorario del IAC”. En el acto, que tuvo lugar en la sede central, en La Laguna, se le homenajeó por sus importantes contribuciones a la cosmología, a la física de los agujeros negros y a la divulgación científica. El acto, comenzó con unas palabras de agradecimiento de Rafael Rebolo, director del centro, que destacó de Hawking su validez como científico y como persona luchadora, que espera que sirva de aliciente para que, en el futuro, otros compañeros

The writer and journalist is the second invitee to participate in the cross-disciplinary proyect "En un lugar del Universo..." which brings together Literature and Astronomy to celebrate the Cervantes centenary.

The instrument, which was taken on May 19th from the IAC Hedaquarters, in La Laguna, to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, on La Palma, passed its first test successfully, taking images of the globular cluster NGC 5053
