  • The red giant branches of Galactic globular clusters in the [(V-I)0,MV] plane: metallicity indices and morphology
The purpose of this study is to carry out a thorough investigation of the changes in morphology of the red giant branch (RGB) of Galactic globular clusters (GGC) as a function of metallicity, in the V,I bands. To this aim, two key points are developed in the course of the analysis. (a) Using our photometric V,I database for Galactic globular

  • Analysis of asymmetric p-mode profiles in GOLF data
We show here evidence for the necessity of an asymmetric form in modelling the profile of an acoustic mode in the power spectral density. The analysis was performed on a 805-day series of GOLF data (l=0 to 3). The assumptions used for the fits are discussed and their consequences quantified, in particular for the optimum choice of the fitting

  • The effective temperature scale of giant stars (F0-K5). III. Stellar radii and the calibration of convection
We present an analysis of radii of giant stars with 6200 K>= T_eff >= 3800 K based on angular diameters obtained by means of the IRFM and distances computed from Hipparcos parallaxes. In order to asses the reliability of IRFM diameters we have considered a selected sample of stars whose diameters have been directly measured by interferometric

  • The ionized gas in the spiral galaxy NGC 3359. II. Kinematics
The spiral galaxy NGC 3359 has been observed in the Hα line with the TAURUS II Fabry-Perot interferometer at the William Herschel Telescope within the BARS programme on the Canary Island telescopes in order to study the kinematics of the ionized gas. We have produced maps of velocity and velocity dispersion, and computed the rotation curve out to ~

  • Spectroscopy of the Lens Galaxy of Q0957+561A,B: Implications of a Possible Central Massive Dark Object
We present new long-slit William Herschel Telescope spectroscopic observations of the lens galaxy G1 associated with the double-imaged QSO 0957+561A,B. The central stellar velocity dispersion obtained, σl=310+/-20 km s-1, is in reasonable agreement with other measurements of this dynamical parameter. Using all updated measurements of the stellar
