  • Atmospheric characterization of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-33b. Detection of Ti and V emission lines and retrieval of a broadened line profile
Ultra-hot Jupiters are highly irradiated gas giant exoplanets on close-in orbits around their host stars. The dayside atmospheres of these objects strongly emit thermal radiation due to their elevated temperatures, making them prime targets for characterization by emission spectroscopy. We analyzed high-resolution spectra from CARMENES, HARPS-N

  • Atmospheric characterization of terrestrial exoplanets in the mid-infrared: biosignatures, habitability, and diversity
Exoplanet science is one of the most thriving fields of modern astrophysics. A major goal is the atmospheric characterization of dozens of small, terrestrial exoplanets in order to search for signatures in their atmospheres that indicate biological activity, assess their ability to provide conditions for life as we know it, and investigate their

  • Asymmetrical tidal tails of open star clusters: stars crossing their cluster's práh† challenge Newtonian gravitation
After their birth a significant fraction of all stars pass through the tidal threshold (práh) of their cluster of origin into the classical tidal tails. The asymmetry between the number of stars in the leading and trailing tails tests gravitational theory. All five open clusters with tail data (Hyades, Praesepe, Coma Berenices, COIN-Gaia 13, NGC

  • An extreme blue nugget, UV-bright starburst at z = 3.613 with 90 per cent of Lyman continuum photon escape
    We present the discovery and analysis of J1316+2614 at z = 3.6130, a UV-bright star-forming galaxy (M UV ≃ -24.7) with large escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation. J1316+2614 is a young (≃10 Myr) star-forming galaxy with SFR ≃ 500 M ⊙ yr -1 and a starburst mass of log(M ⋆/M ⊙) ≃ 9.7. It shows a very steep UV continuum, β UV = -2.59 ± 0.05

  • A probabilistic deep learning model to distinguish cusps and cores in dwarf galaxies
Numerical simulations within a cold dark matter (DM) cosmology form halos whose density profiles have a steep inner slope (‘cusp’), yet observations of galaxies often point towards a flat central ‘core’. We develop a convolutional mixture density neural network model to derive a probability density function (PDF) of the inner density slopes of DM

  • A New Era of Intracluster Light Studies with JWST
Still largely unexplored, the diffuse light in clusters of galaxies traces the past and ongoing buildup of these massive structures. Here we present the first comprehensive study of the intracluster light (ICL) of the cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 (z = 0.39) using the JWST Early Release Observations. These deep and high spatial resolution images allow
