Intermediate-mass black hole evolution scheme

Scheme of how the mass of black holes grows from the origin of the universe (Big Bang) to our bias (Now). As they merge into each other, black holes grow in mass until they become supermassive black holes. This process is very inefficient, so some of the intermediate-mass black holes that existed at the Big Bang still survive in our environment. Credit: Jorge Sánchez Almeida (IAC)
