The Nobel prizewinners in Physics, Robert Wilson and John Mather,  and in Chemistry, Harold Kroto, together with Robert Williams, astrophysicist and former President of the IAU, gave answers this morning (for last Friday) questions from the general public in a meeting organized by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and the Museo de la Ciencia y el Cosmos, belonging to the Museos de Tenerife, following a visit to the headquarters of the IAC in La Laguna.

"If you had a magic wand, what would be the best present you could give to a boy or girl to encourage them to take up a scientific career?"

The distinguished guest, who had come to Tenerife to participate in the STARMUS festival, answer the question without resorting to magic: a microscope and a telescope, with which to discover the world on the smallest and the largest scales, the chance to do science with their own hands, and a good system of exducation which gives equal opportunities to all girls and boys, without any differences between their economic level or the place where they live.

    Observers measure how Andromeda’s central black hole is fed

    A team of scientists led by the Observatory of Munich University and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias have obtained direct visualization of the process of feeding the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Andromeda galaxy. The study reveals the existence of long filamentary structures of gas and dust which move in a spiral starting at a distance from the black hole and ending up at the black hole itself.     Astronomers observe the effect of dark matter on the evolution of the galaxies

    A study led by researcher Laura Scholz, of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) has found, for the first time, observational evidence that the evolution and the properties of the galaxies are conditioned not only by the mass of the stars they contain, but aso by the effect of the dark matter halos which surround them.
