The meeting, which will take place on Friday 1 March at 18:00, is being held on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and International Women's Day.
The Museum of Science and the Cosmos, associated with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), is hosting the Forum of Women Scientists and Technologists this Friday, with the aim of raising the profile of women in the STEM field and serving as a vocational inspiration for future generations.
The event will consist of a round table discussion, which will take place in the Museum's assembly hall at 18:00 and will be free of charge. This forum is part of the activities organised to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February) and International Women's Day (8 March).
At this round table, the public will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science and technology at the hands of leading professionals from the Canary Islands. The experts will share their experiences, revealing the details of their work and its importance in maintaining the progress of society. One of the main purposes is to foster interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers, especially in girls and women, encouraging them to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The moderator of the event will be Verónica Martín, journalist and head of the IAC's Scientific Communication and Culture Unit (UC3). The members of the round table will be: Inés Galindo, PhD in Geological Sciences and specialist in geological studies on oceanic volcanic islands; Teresa Giraldez, PhD in Biochemistry and Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of La Laguna; Rosa Aguilar, professor of Systems and Automation Engineering; Déborah Pero-Sanz, telecommunications engineer with more than 10 years of experience in the sector; Carolina Mallo, PhD in Anthropology and specialist in the microscopic study of archaeological contexts and materials; Clara Gironés, doctor specialising in Family and Community Medicine and associate professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of La Laguna (ULL) and Antonia Varela, PhD in Astrophysics, director of the Museum of Science and the Cosmos, Managing Director of the Starlight Foundation and researcher at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands.
