On 27 and 28 June this year various telescopes may be visited from 10:00 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) has organized two Open Days at Teide Observatory (Izaña, Tenerife) on 27 and 28 June (Friday and Saturday), when several of its telescopes may be visited in groups. The opening hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Open Days form part of the IAC’s outreach activities, which aim to foster awareness of astronomical knowledge among the public. For this purpose, the Teide Observatory has converted an empty telescope dome into a Visitors’ Centre equipped with various facilities for science outreach. With a capacity of 40 people, it is used to explain to visitors the various features of the Observatory, how telescopes work and the importance of astronomy for humanity. Also accessible are the THEMIS Solar Telescope, (CNRS, France-Italy), the Vacuum Tower Telescope (KIS, Germany) and the Solar Laboratory (IAC, Spain).

Entry will be granted on a strict first-come-first-served basis and vehicles must be parked on the space allotted within the Observatory premises. The public are advised to bear in mind of possible altitude-related health risks involved in visiting a high-mountain observatory.
