Science and Technology will be debated in the Technical meeting of RedIRIS in Tenerife

This year’s meeting, which has been organized by the Cabildo of Tenerife via the Science and Technology Park, the University of La Laguna, and the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canaries, will be attended by 350 experts and managers of the network and informatics services affiliated to RedIRIS, mainly universities, research centres, and autonomous regional networks, in order to interchange information and experience.

The inaugural ceremony was performed by the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, accompanied by the Rector of the University of La Laguna, Antonio Martinón, the Director of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, Rafael Rebolo, the head of the Division in the Secretariat of State for R-D+I of the Ministry of Economy and Competitivity, Francisco Herrada, and the Associate Director of RedIRIS , which depends on Red.es, Alberto Pérez.

During the three days of this meeting three plenary talks are being given, one by Miquel Serra-Ricart, of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canaries about transmission of astronomical events, a second by the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, with the title “HTC Connectivity”, and a third by Dr. Octavio Llinás González, of the Oceanic Platform of the Canaries, whose talk has the title “The Ocean of the Future”. In addition there will be several parallel sessions covering a variety of subjects, among which we can pick out campus networks, intelligent environment and networks of sensors, transferring services to the cloud, organization of massive data sets, and e-administration and open government.

To close the meeting there will be a panel discussion about Company Strategy applied to TIC running of universities, chaired by Juan Camarillo of CRUETIC, with the participation of Jaime Busquets of the Polytechnic University of Valencia, dealing with the subject “A Corporate Apps Shop for Universities”, and Santiago Portela and Miguel Rueda of CRUETIC will explain the status of the CUE-RedIRIS project for visualizing computer screens.

This edition of the Technical Meeting of RedIRIS is supported by eighteen companies in the sector, among which we can pick out Alcatel-Lucent & Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise and Teltek who will participate in the meeting offering talks in the technical sections, and presenting their products in an area of exhibits. In this area there are also a number of technical posters about the event.

RedIRIS

RedIRIS is the network of advanced communications for the Spanish academic and scientific communities, which was started in 1988. It serves over 500 academic institutions and affiliated research centres, which include over 150,000 researchers and with a potential user community of over 2 million. It is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitivity, and includes in its map a number of Selected Scientific/Technical installations. It is run by the public company Red.es, belonging to the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Tourism.

As is normal the Technical Meeting was preceded by sessions of the Working Groups of RedIRIS, which took place at the same venue on November 23rd and 24th, and whose objective was the interchange of experience between institutions affiliated to RedIRIS, mainly universities and Spanish research centres, and to make known new developments which have been incorporated into the services on offer.
