Description
The circumnuclear regions of some barred galaxies show strong bursts of star formation organized into miniature spiral arms or rings. Recent work has shown the relation between such regions and the structure of the galaxies. This relation has important implications for our understanding not only of galaxy dynamics, but also of central activity. We present first results from a near-infrared imaging survey of circumnuclear regions of a sample of barred galaxies, some active, some not, using the CFH telescope. We are especially interested in the structures giving rise to gaseous inflow in barred galaxies, and in the relative contributions of hot and cold dust, and young and old stars, to the NIR morphology.
