Description
An IUE archive spectrum of HD 140283 has been analyzed in the region of the 3131 Å 9Be II resonance doublet. Close comparison of the observed and synthetic spectra yields no measurable Be, and a conservative upper limit of 3×10-12 for 9Be, which is one fourth solar, can be set. With this star, and with a previous population II star HD 76932 detailed arguments rule out significant 9Be depletion. The authors can use these [9Be] limits to set upper limits to the fraction of non-primordial 7Li. The results support Spite and Spite's conclusion that most, (if not all) of their observed 7Li is primordial and tend to validate the utility of their [7Li] numbers in deriving the universal baryon/photon ratio using standard Big Bang model.
