  • Probing the Local Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function with Gaia
The Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF) remains an important extragalactic distance indicator despite a still limited understanding of its most important feature - the bright cut-off. External galaxies benefit from consistent distance and extinction, which makes determining the PNLF easier but detailed study of individual objects much more

  • Prevalence of Fast Rotators among Small Near-Earth Asteroids: AN Ongoing Survey from the Canary Islands Observatories
Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) provide valuable opportunities to study the physical and structural properties of small bodies. While most asteroids have rotation periods longer than the ""cohesionless spin barrier""—a 2.2-hour limit beyond which rubble-pile asteroids would break apart due to centrifugal forces—some rotate much faster, challenging

  • NanoSpace: Networking as a tool to understand carbon molecular nanostructures in planetary nebulae
I present a short overview of the COST Action NanoSpace ("Carbon molecular nanostructures in space"; CA21126) together with the most recent updates. This includes the main motivation and scientific challenges, Action structure and organization (e.g., working groups, tasks, etc.) as well as the main objectives and deliverables. A special emphasis is

  • JWST imaging observations of the Ring Nebula
We present JWST images of NGC 6720 (the Ring Nebula), covering wavelengths from 1.6 μm to 25 μm. The bright shell is strongly fragmented with some 20 000 dense globules, bright in H 2, with a characteristic diameter of 0.2 arcsec and density n H∼10 5–10 6cm ‑3. The shell contains a narrow ring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission. H 2

  • Identification of post-AGBs from Gaia DR3 distances and morphology
Gaia DR3 parallaxes of a sample of post-AGB candidates have allowed us to unequivocally establish their evolutionary stage. Making use of the available photometry, interstellar extinction, and parallax-derived distance, their spectral Energy Distributions (SED) were fitted. From this, luminosity and effective temperature were worked out, placing

  • How 4MOST and MOONS will improve constraints on the dynamical masses of Local Group galaxies
The wide-field spectrographs 4MOST and MOONS are expected to enter operations in late 2024 at the ESO Paranal Observatory. These upcoming survey facilities will play an important role in various fields over the next decade. In particular, both will host surveys aimed at observing Local Group (LG) galaxies. We describe how their scientific
