  • Construction progress of WEAVE: the next generation wide-field spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope
We present an update on the overall construction progress of the WEAVE next-generation spectroscopy facility for the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), now that all the major fabrication contracts are in place. We also present a summary of the current planning behind the 5-year initial phase of survey operations, and some detailed end-to-end science

  • Commissioning tests of an Integral Field Unit (IFU) at GREGOR solar telescope
We present the commissioning of an IFU based on image-slicers and a 2D-Field-of-View Scanning System (FoV-SS) for the GREGOR Infrared Spectrograph (GRIS). The prototype of the image-slicer has eight slices of 1.8 mm x 0.1 mm in Zerodur, covering an area of 20 arcsec2. The FoV-SS, equipped with three Degrees of Freedom (DoF), allows to scan a region

  • Closed loop operation with extremely elongated LGS spots in CANARY Phase D
CANARY is a wide-field AO on-sky test facility which has been operated annually on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope since 2010. CANARY has the stated goal of testing and demonstrating AO technologies that are critical for ELT AO performance. It has seen four distinct phases where new AO technologies have been developed and demonstrated

  • Characterization of a candidate dual AGN
We present Chandra and optical observations of a candidate dual active galactic nucleus (AGN) discovered serendipitously while searching for recoiling black holes via a cross-correlation between the serendipitous XMM source catalogue (2XMMi) and SDSS-DR7 galaxies with a separation no larger than 10 times the sum of their Petrosian radii. • CARMENES: high-resolution spectra and precise radial velocities in the red and infrared
The design and construction of CARMENES has been presented at previous SPIE conferences. It is a next-generation radial-velocity instrument at the 3.5m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory, which was built by a consortium of eleven Spanish and German institutions. CARMENES consists of two separate échelle spectrographs covering the wavelength

  • Binary Companions of Evolved Stars in APOGEE DR14: Search Method and Catalog of ∼5000 Companions
Multi-epoch radial velocity measurements of stars can be used to identify stellar, substellar, and planetary-mass companions. Even a small number of observation epochs can be informative about companions, though there can be multiple qualitatively different orbital solutions that fit the data. We have custom-built a Monte Carlo sampler (The Joker)
