  • Neutron bombardment of single wall carbon nanohorn (SWCNH): DSC determination of the stored Wigner-Szilard energy
Single wall carbon nanohorn (SWCNH) were neutron-bombarded to a dose of 3.28 x 10(16) n/cm(2). The Wigner or stored energy was determined by a differential scanning calorimeter and was found 5.49 J/g, 50 times higher than the Wigner energy measured on graphite flakes treated at the same neutron dose. The activation energy for the thermal annealing

  • Multiwavelength study of Cygnus A. IV. Proper motion and location of the nucleus
Context. Cygnus A, as the nearest powerful FR II radio galaxy, plays an important role in understanding jets and their impact on the surrounding intracluster medium. Aims: We explain why the nucleus is observed superposed onto the eastern lobe rather than in between the two lobes, and why the jet and counterjet are non-colinear. Methods: We made a

  • Modeling the globally-integrated spectral variability of the Archean Earth: The purple planet
Ongoing searches for exoplanetary systems have revealed a wealth of planets with diverse physical properties. Planets even smaller than the Earth have already been detected and the efforts of future missions are aimed at the discovery, and perhaps characterization, of small rocky exoplanets within the habitable zone of their stars. Clearly, what we

  • Milky Way rotation curve from proper motions of red clump giants
Aims: We derive the stellar rotation curve of the Galaxy in the range of Galactocentric radii of R = 4-16 kpc at different vertical heights from the Galactic plane of z between -2 and +2 kpc. With this we reach high Galactocentric distances in which the kinematics is poorly known due mainly to uncertainties in the distances to the sources. Methods

  • Metallicity Inhomogeneities in Local Star-forming Galaxies as a Sign of Recent Metal-poor Gas Accretion
We measure the oxygen metallicity of the ionized gas along the major axis of seven dwarf star-forming galaxies. Two of them, SDSSJ1647+21 and SDSSJ2238+14, show sime0.5 dex metallicity decrements in inner regions with enhanced star formation activity. This behavior is similar to the metallicity drop observed in a number of local tadpole galaxies by

  • Mass spectrometric analysis of selected radiolyzed amino acids in an astrochemical context
A selection of amino acids, namely arginine, proline and tyrosine previously irradiated to 3.2 mega-Gray in the solid state and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) were analyzed in the present work by mass spectrometry with the purpose to identify the radiolysis products and validate the results
