  • Sampling effects in the emission-line spectra of Hii regions
We show that sampling effects in the initial mass function are very important in the low-mass cluster case. To this aim, we compute photoionization models ionized by realistic clusters made up of various combinations of individual stars and clusters built with a synthesis model. We discuss the differences in the position on diagnostic diagrams

  • Radial distribution of the multiple stellar populations in ω Centauri
Aims: We present a detailed study of the radial distribution of the multiple populations identified in the Galactic globular cluster ω Cen. Methods: We used both space-based images (ACS/WFC and WFPC2) and ground-based images (FORS1@VLT and WFI@2.2m ESO telescopes) to map the cluster from the inner core to the outskirts ( 20 arcmin). These data sets

  • Optimization of Planck-LFI on-board data handling
To asses stability against 1/f noise, the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) on-board the Planck mission will acquire data at a rate much higher than the data rate allowed by the science telemetry bandwith of 35.5 Kbps. The data are processed by an on-board pipeline, followed on-ground by a decoding and reconstruction step, to reduce the volume of data

  • Optical linear polarization in ultra cool dwarfs. A tool to probe dust in the ultra cool dwarf atmospheres
Aims. Recent studies have detected linear polarization in L dwarfs in the optical I band. Theoretical models have been developed to explain this polarization. These models predict higher polarization at shorter wavelengths. We discuss the polarization in the R and I band of 4 ultra cool dwarfs. Methods: We report linear polarization measurements of

  • On the physical origin of the second solar spectrum of the Sc II line at 4247 Å
Context: The peculiar three-peak structure of the linear polarization profile shown in the second solar spectrum by the Ba ii line at 4554 Å has been interpreted as the result of the different contributions coming from the barium isotopes with and without hyperfine structure. In the same spectrum, a triple peak polarization signal is also observed
