  • Wave Propagation and Shock Formation in Different Magnetic Structures
Velocity oscillations "measured" simultaneously at the photosphere and the chromosphere—from time series of spectropolarimetric data in the 10830 Å region—of different solar magnetic features allow us to study the properties of wave propagation as a function of the magnetic flux of the structure (i.e., two different-sized sunspots, a tiny pore, and

  • VLT/FORS1 spectrophotometry of the first planetary nebula discovered in the Phoenix dwarf galaxy
Context: A planetary nebula (PN) candidate was discovered during FORS imaging of the Local Group dwarf galaxy Phoenix. Aims: We use this PN to complement abundances from red-giant stars. Methods: FORS spectroscopy was used to confirm the PN classification. Empirical methods and photoionization modeling were used to derive elemental abundances from

  • UTM, a universal simulator for lightcurves of transiting systems
The Universal Transit Modeller (UTM) is a light-curve simulator for all kinds of transiting or eclipsing configurations between arbitrary numbers of several types of objects, which may be stars, planets, planetary moons, and planetary rings. Applications of UTM to date have been mainly in the generation of light-curves for the testing of detection

  • Ultracool Subdwarfs: The Halo Population Down to the Substellar Limit
Ultracool subdwarfs are low luminosity, late-type M and L dwarfs that exhibit spectroscopic indications of subsolar metallicity and halo kinematics. Their recent discovery and ongoing investigation have led to new insights into the role of metallicity in the opacity structure, chemistry (e.g. dust formation) and evolution of low-temperature

  • Transverse Oscillations of Systems of Coronal loops
We study the collective kinklike normal modes of a system of several cylindrical loops using the T-matrix theory. Loops that have similar kink frequencies oscillate collectively with a frequency which is slightly different from that of the individual kink mode. On the other hand, if the kink frequency of a loop is different from that of the others

  • Transits in Poorly Sampled Data Gaia and Beyond
Gaia, an ESA cornerstone mission, will obtain of the order of 100 high-precision photometric observations over five years for tens of millions of stars with V 17. The vast number of red dwarfs in this data set, with their correspondingly deep (high S/N) transits, makes it worthwhile to explore the possibility of detecting transits in such data
