  • Geometry Diagnostics of a Stellar Flare from Fluorescent X-Rays
We present evidence of Fe fluorescent emission in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of the single G-type giant HR 9024 during a large flare. In analogy to solar X-ray observations, we interpret the observed Fe Kα line as being produced by illumination of the photosphere by ionizing coronal X-rays, in which case, for a given Fe photospheric abundance, its

  • Gemini/GMOS spectroscopy of the spheroid and globular cluster system of NGC 3923
We present a technique to extract ultra-deep diffuse-light spectra from the standard multi-object spectroscopic observations used to investigate extragalactic globular cluster (GC) systems. This technique allows a clean extraction of the spectrum of the host galaxy diffuse light from the same slitlets as the GC targets. We show the utility of the

  • Galaxy Counts at 24 μm in the SWIRE Fields
This paper presents galaxy source counts at 24 μm in the six Spitzer Wide-field InfraRed Extragalactic (SWIRE) fields. The source counts are compared to counts in other fields, and to model predictions that have been updated since the launch of Spitzer. This analysis confirms a very steep rise in the Euclidean-normalized differential number counts

  • Follow-up observations of GLIMPSE selected Post-AGB candidates
We propose to use the last Spitzer observing cycle to increase the sample of hidden post-AGB stars with mid-infrared spectroscopy. We selected predominantly GLIMPSE selected obscured objects tentatively identified as stars which have just abandoned the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and are now evolving to the planetary nebula (PN) stage. They are

  • First stars XI. Chemical composition of the extremely metal-poor dwarfs in the binary CS 22876-032
Context: Unevolved metal-poor stars constitute a fossil record of the early Galaxy, and can provide invaluable information on the properties of the first generations of stars. Binary systems also provide direct information on the stellar masses of their member stars. Aims: The purpose of this investigation is a detailed abundance study of the

  • Extrasolar planet detection by binary stellar eclipse timing: evidence for a third body around CM Draconis
Aims:Our objective is to elucidate the physical process that causes the observed observed-minus-calculated (O-C) behavior in the M4.5/M4.5 binary CM Dra and to test for any evidence of a third body around the CM Dra system. Methods: New eclipse minimum timings of CM Dra were obtained between the years 2000 and 2007. The O-C times of the system are
