  • The sigma Orionis substellar population. VLT/FORS spectroscopy and 2MASS photometry
VLT/FORS spectroscopy and 2MASS near-infrared photometry, together with previously known data, have been used to establish the membership and the properties of a sample of low-mass candidate members of the sigma Orionis cluster with masses spanning from 1 Msun down to about 0.013 Msun (i.e., deuterium-burning mass limit). We have observed K-band

  • The First Young Brown Dwarf in the Serpens Cloud
We report the discovery of the first young brown dwarf in the Serpens cloud (BD-Ser 1). It is obscured by more than ten magnitudes of visual absorption as indicated by near infrared (NIR) photometric survey at the NTT and confirmed by NIR spectroscopy at the VLT. We estimate the mass of this brown dwarf to be M ˜0.05 M&sun; and its age to be ˜3.5

  • The cosmic microwave background power spectrum out to l= 1400 measured by the Very Small Array
We have observed the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in three regions of sky using the Very Small Array (VSA) in an extended configuration with antennas of beamwidth 2° at 34 GHz. Combined with data from previous VSA observations using a more compact array with larger beamwidth, we measure the power spectrum of the primordial CMB anisotropies

  • Sunshine, Earthshine and Climate Change: II. Solar Origins of Variations in the Earth's Albedo
There are terrestrial signatures of the solar activity cycle in ice core data (Ram & Stoltz 1999), but the variations in the sun's irradiance over the cycle seem too small to account for the signature (Lean 1997; Goode & Dziembowski 2003). Thus, one would expect that the signature must arise from an indirect effect(s) of solar activity. Such an

  • Sulphur abundances and line temperatures in a sample of HII galaxies
We present long-slit observations in the red and near infrared of 12 HII galaxies made with the Isaac Newton Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in 1999 February and 2000 January. The spectral range includes the sulphur lines [SII] at 6717, 6731 Å and [SIII] at 9069, 9532 Å. For all the observed galaxies, ion-weighted temperatures
