  • Star Formation in the Local Universe from the CALIFA Sample. II. Activation and Quenching Mechanisms in Bulges, Bars, and Disks
We estimate the current extinction-corrected Hα star formation rate (SFR) of the different morphological components that shape galaxies (bulges, bars, and disks). We use a multicomponent photometric decomposition based on Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging to Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes for a

  • Star Formation in the Spiral Arms of NGC 4321. II. H i Distribution and Kinematics
We present H I 21 cm observations of the grand design spiral galaxy NGC 4321, as obtained with the VLA. From our original data, we have obtained data cubes with resolutions ranging from 13" to 45". The H I is observed to break up into small condensations at high resolution. These condensations, with typical masses of 3.3±0.7 × 107 Msun, are not

  • Star-gas decoupling and a non-rotating stellar core in He 2-10. Integral field spectroscopy with FLAMES/ARGUS
Aims:We study the two-dimensional distribution and kinematics of the stellar and gaseous components in the centre of the blue compact dwarf galaxy He 2-10. The aim is to compare the kinematics of gas and stars in order to determine whether they are consistent with one another, or if stars and gas can be decoupled due to gravitational perturbations

  • STARE operations experience and its data quality control
The STARE instrument was the first to detect the transits of an extrasolar planet in 1999. To date it has performed one of the longest running searches for transits, being in nearly continous operations since July 2001 at Teide Observatory, Tenerife. We describe the instrumental setup and the scheme that is used for data acquisition, handling and

  • Stars and brown dwarfs in the σ Orionis cluster. III. OSIRIS/GTC low-resolution spectroscopy of variable sources
Context. Although many studies have been performed so far, there are still dozens of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the young σ Orionis open cluster without detailed spectroscopic characterisation. Aims: We look for unknown strong accretors and disc hosts that were undetected in previous surveys. Methods: We collected low-resolution

  • Statistical properties of magnetic fields in intranetwork
We report a study of the quiet sun's magnetic field based on high-resolution infrared spectropolarimetric observations (TIP/VTT). We find that in almost 50% of the pixels Stokes V and in 15% the Stokes Q and/or U profiles have a signal above 10-3. The statistical properties of the mainly intranetwork field sampled by these observations are
