Artist’s impression of MAXI J0637−430 during an eruption
An artist’s impression of how the disc of MAXI J0637−430 changes during an outburst. During the brightest phase, the inner part of the disc swells and casts a shadow over the outer regions, which remain relatively cool. As the system fades, this structure deflates, the shadow disappears and the outer regions are more exposed to radiation, causing them to heat up. Credit: Gabriel Pérez, SMM (IAC)
