On March 20 we celebrate Equal Day to promote peace through Astronomy

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias wants to join the international initiative Equal Day. For this purpose, we have organized an event open to all Spanish-speaking schools where two astrophysicists will explain what the equinoxes are, make a live astronomical observation and invite attendees to share a message of peace.

March 20 is the day of the equinox, when day and night have the same duration in the entire globe. This reminds us that all human beings live on the same small planet and share the same fascination when observing the Cosmos.

The Equal Day initiative aims to unite people around the world to promote peace, equity, diversity, sustainability and empathy through astronomy. On March 20 2025, stargazing and educational workshops will take place around the world, with the aim of communicating a universal message of peace and equity inspired by astronomy.

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, via its educational project PETeR, will share its own message of peace in a videoconference meeting with schools..

The Equal Day event of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias will take place on March 20 2025, from 11:00 to 12:00 UTC - Canary Islands time (12:00 to 13:00 CET) organized within its educational project PETeR and will consist of an open remote observation with the SARA-KP telescope with all the schools that wish to participate, both from Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. During the event, the project's educators, Nayra Rodríguez Eugenio and Alejandra Goded Merino, will describe the equinoxes, make live astronomical observations and ask the participating schools to share a message of peace and solidarity. To attend, simply fill in the registration form on the project's website.

There are other possibilities to participate for those individuals or entities that wish to do so. Organize your own event promoting Astronomy as a message of peace on March 20, 2025, or send your own messages individually.
