  • Artist’s impression of a planetary fragment orbits the star SDSS J122859.93+104032.9
    Researchers from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL) have discovered the remains of a planet inside a disc of debris circling a white dwarf. Thought to be rich in heavy metals iron and nickel which helped it survive destruction of its planetary system. This work, has been published today in Science magazine.

    The Gran Telescopio Canarias today inaugurates its website grantecan.es which will communicate the telescope with the wide public during its observing nights. Furthermore this coming Saturday, March 9th, there will be the first of a series of broadcasts in real time from GRANTECAN during which it will be possible to talk to the professional astronomers and ask them questions. This initiative is co-financed by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) of the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities.

    The best time to observe the first meteor shower of 2019 will be the night of January 3rd to 4th. The astronomical event will be broadcast live from the Observatorio del Teide (Tenerife) and Higuera la Real (Badajoz), with the collaboration of the European STARS4ALL project and the initiative promoted by the Junta de Extremadura, "Extremadura, Buenas Noches".
