  • Discovery of the Near-infrared Counterpart to the Luminous Neutron-star Low-mass X-Ray Binary GX 3+1
Using the High Resolution Camera on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we have measured an accurate position for the bright persistent neutron star X-ray binary and atoll source GX 3+1. At a location that is consistent with this new position, we have discovered the near-infrared (NIR) counterpart to GX 3+1 in images taken with the PANIC and

  • Discovery of a new Y dwarf: WISE J030449.03-270508.3
We present a new Y dwarf, WISE J030449.03-270508.3, confirmed from a candidate sample designed to pick out low-temperature objects from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) data base. The new object is typed Y0pec following a visual comparison with spectral standards, and lies at a likely distance of 10-17 pc. Its tangential velocity

  • Deep spectroscopic luminosity function of Abell 85: no evidence for a steep upturn of the faint-end slope
We present a new deep determination of the spectroscopic luminosity function (LF) within the virial radius of the nearby and massive Abell 85 (A85) cluster down to the dwarf regime (M* + 6) using Very Large Telescope/Visible Multi-Object Spectrograph (VLT/VIMOS) spectra for ˜2000 galaxies with mr ≤ 21 mag and ≤ 24 mag arcsec-2. The resulting LF

  • Constraints on the merging channel of massive galaxies since z ˜ 1
We probe the merging channel of massive galaxies over the z = 0.3-1.3 redshift window by studying close pairs in a sample of 238 galaxies with stellar mass ≳1011 M⊙, from the SHARDS (Survey for High-z Absorption Red and Dead Sources) survey. SHARDS provides medium-band photometry equivalent to low-resolution optical spectra (R ˜ 50), allowing us to

  • Constraining Galaxy Evolution with Scaling Relations
An ongoing study is presented in which a photometric non-linear Scaling Relation of Early-Type Galaxies (ETGs) is proposed to carry out a consistency test on cosmic and galaxy evolution.

  • Carbon and Oxygen Abundances from Recombination Lines in Low Metallicity H II Regions
We have measured C II and O II recombination lines in several H II regions of low-metallicity dwarf galaxies. These objects show lower C/O ratios than H II regions in spiral galaxies, indicating different chemical evolution histories.
