  • The First Billion Years project: birthplaces of direct collapse black holes
We investigate the environment in which direct-collapse black holes may form by analysing a cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation that is part of the First Billion Years project. This simulation includes the most relevant physical processes leading to direct collapse of haloes, most importantly, molecular hydrogen depletion by dissociation of H2

  • The B Fields in OB Stars (BOB) Survey
The B fields in OB stars (BOB) survey is an ESO Large Programme collecting spectropolarimetric observations for a large number of early-type stars in order to study the occurrence rate, properties, and ultimately the origin of magnetic fields in massive stars. A total of 98 objects was observed over 20 nights with FORS2 and HARPSpol to July 2014

  • The age-metallicity relationship in the Fornax spheroidal dwarf galaxy
We produce a comprehensive field star age-metallicity relationship (AMR) from the earliest epoch until ˜1 Gyr ago for three fields in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy by using VI photometric data obtained with FORS1 at the VLT. We find that the innermost one does not contain dominant very old stars (age > 12 Gyr), whereas the relatively outer

  • Rossiter-McLaughlin Observations of 55 Cnc e
We present Rossiter-McLaughlin observations of the transiting super-Earth 55 Cnc e collected during six transit events between 2012 January and 2013 November with HARPS and HARPS-N. We detect no radial velocity signal above 35 cm s–1 (3σ) and confine the stellar v sin i sstarf to 0.2 ± 0.5 km s–1. The star appears to be a very slow rotator

  • Revisiting the transits of CoRoT-7b at a lower activity level
The first super-Earth with measured radius discovered was CoRoT-7b and it has opened the new field of rocky exoplanet characterisation. To better understand this interesting system, new observations were taken with the CoRoT satellite. During this run 90 new transits were obtained in the imagette mode. These were analysed together with the previous

  • Reconstruction of global solar radiation time series from 1933 to 2013 at the Izaña Atmospheric Observatory
This paper presents the reconstruction of the 80-year time series of daily global solar radiation (GSR) at the subtropical high-mountain Izaña Atmospheric Observatory (IZO) located in Tenerife (The Canary Islands, Spain). For this purpose, we combine GSR estimates from sunshine duration (SD) data using the Ångström-Prescott method over the 1933
