Empirical Determination of Convection Parameters in White Dwarfs. I. Whole Earth Telescope Observations of EC14012-1446We report on an analysis of 308.3 hr of high-speed photometry targeting the pulsating DA white dwarf EC14012-1446. The data were acquired with the Whole Earth Telescope during the 2008 international observing run XCOV26. The Fourier transform of the light curve contains 19 independent frequencies and numerous combination frequencies. The dominantProvencal, J. L. et al.

Detection of IR enhancement and evidence of disk formation around the Be star from SAX J2103.5+4545/ CGS 03588-00834We report on recent IR observations of the Be/X-ray binary system SAX J2103.5+4545/ CGS 03588-00834, obtained with the 1.52 m Carlos Sánchez Telescope (Observatorio de Izaña, Tenerife, Spain), and on the evolution of the H-alpha equivalent width for this system measured with the spectrograph Albireo, at the 1.5 m telescope of the Observatorio deCamero-Arranz, A. et al.

Cosmological constraints on nonstandard inflationary quantum collapse modelsWe briefly review an important shortcoming—unearthed in previous works—of the standard version of the inflationary model for the emergence of the seeds of cosmic structure. We consider here some consequences emerging from a proposal inspired on ideas of Penrose and Diósi [R. Penrose, The Emperor’s New Mind. Concerning Computers, Minds and Laws ofLandau, Susana J. et al.

Contrails developed under frontal influences of the North AtlanticSatellite imagery reveals a visually striking pattern of persistent line-shaped contrails located to the Northwest of the British Isles on 1 September 2007, just before sunrise. These contrails formed over the heavily trafficked eastbound North Atlantic Track (NAT) flight paths, as they intersected an area of prefrontal mixing. The high relativeKilham, D. A. et al.

Constraints on Feedback Processes during the Formation of Early-type GalaxiesGalaxies are found to obey scaling relations between a number of observables. These relations follow different trends at the low- and high-mass ends. The processes driving the curvature of scaling relations remain uncertain. In this Letter, we focus on the specific family of early-type galaxies, deriving the star formation histories of a completeTrevisan, M. et al.
