  • A Two-Micron Galactic Survey
The first results are presented here of the Two-Micron Galactic Survey (TMGS). The TMGS is the most sensitive near-infrared survey of the Galactic plane yet attempted on a large scale. The Galactic plane has been drift-scanned in several regions over the areas -5° l 30°, |b| ≤ 15° and 30° l 180°, |b| ≤ 5°. The discussion in this paper

  • A possible low-mass type Ia supernova
IN the standard model for type Ia supernovae1, a massive white dwarf in a binary system accretes matter from the companion star until it reaches the Chandrasekhar mass (the stability limit for degenerate-electron stars, corresponding to ~1.4 solar masses), and a runaway thermonuclear explosion ensues. In a popular variant of this model2, the

  • A High-Resolution Study of Inhomogeneities in Sunspot Umbrae
A detailed study of the brightness, size, spatial distribution, and filling factor of the different umbral inhomogeneities is presented. Many sunspots show multiple umbrae (separated by strong light bridges, SLBs), which behave like independent units. These are termed umbral cores (UCs). From the phenomenological point of view, UCs show two

  • 1-5-um infrared camera of the IAC
The Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) is undertaking the construction of an IR camera for astronomical use at the 1.5 meter (f/13,8) Carlos Sanchez IR Telescope (CST), sited at the Observatorio del Teide (Tenerife). The camera will employ a 256 X 256 InSb focal plane array, and will be used in the 1 - 5 micron atmospheric windows. The

  • The V-R Diagram - a Diagnostic Tool for the Dynamical Classification of Spiral Galaxies
The relations between the angular momentum (J) and the mass (M) for a sample of spiral galaxies are discussed for galaxies distributed in the rotational velocity (V) - size (R) plane. It is found that, for a given mass, Sc galaxies have larger angular momentum (~20%) than Sa. The absence of segregation in the angular momentum (J) - mass (M) plane
