  • Observations of the birth and fine structure of sunspot penumbrae
High resolution white-light pictures of sunspot penumbrae are presented. These include pictures showing details of their filamentary structure and some instances of the birth of a penumbra. The observations are discussed in the framework of current penumbra theories.

  • The spectra of late-type dwarfs and sub-dwarfs in the near ultraviolet. III - an atlas of MG II H and K profiles
Using a radically new suite of data extraction routines, IUEARM, high resolution IUE spectra of six F and G stars, taken at regular intervals since 1978 are analysed. The salient features of the new routines are: reduction of interorder scattering via two-dimensional deconvolution of the echelle spectrograph image plane, with high frequency

  • Chromospheric modelling in late-type dwarfs. I - Quiescent objects
Attention is given to problems which arise when an attempt is made to use observational material to clarify the mechanisms responsible for the heating of the chromosphere in a late-type star, in order to derive a clearer physical view of the nature of a chromosphere, its relation to the underlying photosphere, and the overlying corona. • The flux rope models checked by some observations
High resolution H alpha and white light observation of the birth of 73 active regions (AR) were used to check models of sunspots. It is concluded that large AR result from the emergence of a compact and twisted flux rope, while the small ones are produced by the clustering of flux tubes by supergranular motions.

  • Solar oscillations from two widely separated stations
Potassium line data from observatories in Hawaii and Spain were used to establish the authenticity of complex solar oscillation signals. Combination of the two data sets yields precise frequency, amplitude and phase determinations. Analyses of individual lines indicate possible decay and excitation of individual modes and suggest lifetimes for the
